Transitions Career Development Program

  • You'll See it When You Believe It!
For children, they "see it when they believe it"; for adults, they will "believe it when they see it".

When do we lose our sense of possibility and the belief that we can be what we want to be or do what we want to in our lives?

We can use the excuse that 'real life' has other plans for us, that we grow up and learn what is practical and what is just a fanciful childhood dream. However, many people live their life from a limited reality-based place while other people create a reality that is limitless and in alignment with their hearts' desire and core values. I've met both!

In our Career Exploration program, we invite people to dream, to stretch their imagination as far as it can go and to access their inner most desires. Some people really embrace this process and liberate themselves from self-imposed limits. Other don't let go at all, either out of fear (can't go there, as I will never be able to do that) or out of past conditioning that has prevented them from even dreaming! How misfortunate that is?

It's not to say that we expect people to turn all their dreams into reality on a literal level.

What we do is, give them the space to explore all the facets of themselves, and a chance to be aware and take ownership for what they really want. There is definitely the mechanics of working out how they can make this real and a part of their career or personal life - on some level - but we have to go to the place of possibilities first.

Thirty years ago, if you had told me that I would be doing what I loved, appreciating the people I work with and for, making money at it as well as being able to do the other activities in my life that I am doing, I would have laughed. Thirty years ago I was old. I did not dream. However, as I have grown, I have been able to access the child in myself and it's because of that, that I have been able to 'see it...and do it....when I believe it’!

    How about you??

  • To do before resigning
    If you’re thinking of quitting…

Although leaving a job may seem to be your best option, this decision should be made as part of an intentional career plan. Before leaving your job, here are a few tips to consider:

    1) Talk to your supervisor, employer or HR manager. If you're dissatisfied with your job or feel it lacks the opportunities you desire, you should consider discussing this clearly with your employer. Although they may not have taken the time up to now to properly discuss this with you, why not give them the opportunity to address your concerns or map out new opportunities for you. They made an investment in hiring and training you, and may well be willing to work at keeping you.

    2) Collect information for your career portfolio. Now is the time to collect job descriptions for your current (and past) positions within the company, references from work from colleagues and information for you career portfolio such as a summary of the work and projects you've contributed to at the company.

    3) Give your employer appropriate notice (as much as possible). If you were to be laid off from your job, you would want a proper notice period so you could look for work and make the necessary arrangements. The same applies to the employer. They may not be happy about you leaving, but they will appreciate being given enough notice to find your replacement and for you to assist in training the new person or completing urgent projects.

    4) Start some of your job search preparation now. Update your resume, start contacting trusted networking contacts and begin researching job postings and potential employer websites so that you hit the ground running.

    5) Never bad-mouth your employer either before or after you leave. When people say "What? You quit your 'good' job?” don't scramble to justify your move by blaming your employer. Remain grounded and confident and state that "leaving was the best option for me at this time and I'm excited about new options and opportunities”. It's the classy and self-confident way to go.

  • Do You Want to be Successful in Life? Then Get Out of Your Own Way
I was listening to an audio clip the other day on one of my informational/inspirational websites, and it had Warren Buffet speaking about success. Warren Buffet, as you may know, is an investor, businessman, philanthropist, and the richest man in the world. That’s impressive in itself, but what has also impressed many people about Warren is his character, attitude and philosophies about life and success.

The lecture I heard was him sharing some basic tools for success in life and work with some college students. He said that it isn’t necessarily IQ or talent that will provide success, but rationality. This means that a person’s habits, character and temperament guide them to getting what they want in life. He said “It won’t be because the world doesn’t allow you to get what you want, it’s because you won’t allow yourself to…you need to get out of your own way.”

In my work of helping people to make powerful and effective decisions around life and career transition, I am confronted with their doubts, insecurities, fears and excuses. Some peopl
